Well it had to happen. As the mom of four boys, I knew that sooner or later I would have a broken bone on my hands…. honestly, I’ve been counting my lucky stars up to now that we hadn’t had any broken bones yet!
Yesterday though our luck changed, the boys were all playing in the back yard, enjoying the first sunny day we’ve had in a while, and Owen came in crying (honestly, not that rare of an event in our back yard when it comes to three boys, in one yard there is lots of toy stealing/swing arguments… random “so and so said such and such” complaints.) So I wasn’t too alarmed when my sensitive Owen came in in tears, he sat on the couch, said he’d fallen down, he told me through his tears that he’d been climbing one of the little play things in our back yard (its no more than maybe 4 feet off the ground) and he fell off, seemed like nothing to be too concerned over really…. But then he looked down at his arm, and went hysterical, I looked over and the poor boy’s forearm was bent all funky
. It was obviously broken!
Suddenly things got urgent. I picked up the phone, called G, and told Gareth and Reece that we had to rush to the hospital (and after a momentary freak out they steeled themselves). I was really proud of all of us as we got quickly into the van and headed straight to the hospital. Owen was clearly in pain, and alternating between sobbing and shaking, but he was really amazing considering what he’d been through.
We got to the Hospital and they rushed my little sweetie to a room really pretty fast. I had Tennyson on one hip, and Gareth and Reece in tow as I stayed as close as possible to my little injured one. A few times Gareth even held little Tennyson on his lap for me, because I had to help with Owen, it was really pretty hectic in that little er hospital room, but we managed, and g showed up soon to take #1, 3, and 4 off my hands so I could focus on O (but not before I had to leave a poor overwhelmed nurse with all three of them while I followed Owen to an x-ray).
In the end, we found out he’d broken both bones in his left forearm completely through, they set it last night (while brave and slightly overwhelmed mom held her breath and her little boys hand). I was amazed with how good of a sport Owen was when they were doing all sorts of this that and the other thing to him, hospitals are scary and overwhelming and he was quite the little trooper. He was so scared, “Mom this is just like a nightmare only a real one when I’m awake!” but he was still so brave, and so sweet even through it all.
We still have to see the orthopedist tomorrow and then I’ll know more about what the course of action for the future is, but wow, what a crazy day!
Cute story to end on, yesterday, after Owen had his temporary cast put on, and he was still a bit loopy from the meds, he looked at me. Tearing up, he said, “Mom! I’m not going to be able to HUG you with my cast on!”… Mommy’s heart could barely take that level of Owen brand sweetness, I promised him though, that we would definitely be able to figure out hugging when he was able to sit up better. Today we tested it out…
sigh… suddenly Owen feels like my precious baby boy again, I love him so much! I’m so so so glad he is ok.

Oh my goodness, what a day!! I’m glad Owen is okay, he is so sweet. We haven’t dealt with broken bones yet (knock on wood!), just stitches… I’m sure the day will come. Take good care, hope to see you soon!

Ohhh, lots of *careful* hugs for Owen. I feel for him. I did almost the same thing when I was 4 1/2. Stood on a table to see out the window and ‘whooshed’ onto the floor (same arm, same break). The good thing is that you got him care before most of the swelling set in. That’s going to help a lot. TIP: blowing cool air up/down the cast helps with the itching. All the best to everyone!

You rock for being so in control even when you could barely be. How emotional to have a hurting child but still have the chaos of other kids needing your time tugging you in all directions.
Owen’s a trooper. I can tell in the first picture

Poor guy! What a brave little man though – clearly learning to stay composed (on the outside anyway) from his Mommy.
I hope he heals quickly, with as little itching as possible!!
